The City of Kitakyushu was selected as an "Eco-Model City" by the government in July 2008.

In response, an environmental model city action plan (Kitakyushu Green Frontier Plan) was formulated in March 2009.

In this plan, we have set a target of reducing CO2 emissions by 50% in the city and 150% in the Asian region by 2050 (compared to 2005 levels), and the Asia Low Carbon Center plays a central role in decarbonizing the Asian region.

In October 2020, our city declared itself a zero-carbon city, aiming to achieve a decarbonized society by 2050.

As for contributions outside Japan, we will make use of the inter-city network we have cultivated so far, centering on the Kitakyushu Asia Center for Carbon Neutrality, and aim to transfer our city's efforts toward decarbonization and technologies that meet the diverse needs of Asian cities, such as waste treatment.

Kitakyushu Asia Center for Carbon Neutrality will continue to contribute to the decarbonization of the Asian region and revitalize the local economy.
